Cottonwood Dagger larva - Acronicta lepusculina Town of Baileys Harbor, Hidden Corners Sanctuary, Door County, Wisconsin, USA August 10, 2002
5th instar larva from female that came to night light July 11, 2002. Eggs hatched July 20, 2002. Fed Balsam Poplar (Populus balsamifera) and Willow (Salix). The 3rd and 4th instar larvae are on MPG website. These are my data base notes: The larvae are so beautiful. They actually reminded me of those long-haired dogs on the Westminster Dog Show, where their silky, flowing, shining hairs bounce softly as they walk. That is exactly what the larvae looked like when they crawled around the jar. They formed loose cocoons with their own hairs on August 20, 2002. I hate to admit it, but I fell in love with these guys. I was depressed all day after the last one formed its cocoon. It was like the day our first child went off to college. Cocoons overwintered in fruit cellar. Adults eclosed May 20 and 22, 2003.
