I didn't get a closer photo because (without thinking) I "saw" a picnic beetle.
Photographed at night on a shelf fungus.

The slug....
The slug is a native species to Eastern North America. It is a species of Philomycus. Species can be difficult to get these down to but I would suspect from the strong orange pigment along the foot fringe which I would assume also would be on the sole, that this is likely Philomycus togatus. Philomycus meaning friend of fungi or fungus loving.

your ID looks correct
interesting behavioral observation. Worth keeping for the Guide.

Thanks..
and I have to keep it posted because there are none from Iowa.
