Big Spider in the garden - Araneus diadematus

Big Spider in the garden - Araneus diadematus
West Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut, USA
September 11, 2010
The large spider reeled in the small one, wrapped him off, then sloped off into the shrubbery. I have photos of silk coming out of the spinnerets, too. Wow.

Looks to be Araneus
likely male approaching a female. It may be diadematus, but we can't see the color pattern well. Maybe Lynette will recognize it.

I don't know about the male-female thing, though at first I figured this was more a mating situation than anything else I could imagine. But then the big one wrapped the little one up in lashings of silk until the little one could no longer be seen. I would be psyched if this was reproductive, but when everything was done, the little guy was shrouded in silk and the big one was guarding him. I'd appreciate anything by way of ID and information.

Araneus diadematus looks right
to bad the little guy became dinner instead of boyfriend.
