sawfly? with aphids? - Diplazon laetatorius - female

sawfly? with aphids? - Diplazon laetatorius - Female
Merrimack, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
September 6, 2010
I saw this sawfly/wasp (i'm still not an expert on IDing them) on a milkweed leaf around all these oleander aphids. On a milkweed leaf a few feet away, I saw a dead sawfly/wasp that looked similar but with an all black abdomen. I have never seen them before. Also, there were these caterpillar things on there too. Maybe they have something to do with the sawflies? Because I have never seen caterpillars on milkweed before. And now there are lots.

The "caterpillar" is the larva of an aphidophagous syrphid, which is what the female of Diplazon laetatorius is looking for among the aphids.
