Thanks for the guidance. Looking further it seems like it is one of these three - citima, foxleei, or interrupta. I will try to get more photos since I saw it again in the yard today. What specifically should I be looking for to identify at the species level.

 
Difficult...
If you read other posts, you'll see that it is difficult to determine from photos. A lateral of the eyes might help an expert. I see that Martin moved your photo. If he (a Syrphid expert) didn't put it to species, it probably can't determined from this image.

the most important pic would be the thorax from the side to see the yellow pattern on the pleura and maybe a shot of the face from the side...but I think this might be foxleei
