Unidentified fly (?) at the Carpinteria Bluffs - Hemipenthes sinuosa

Unidentified fly (?) at the Carpinteria Bluffs - Hemipenthes sinuosa
Carpinteria Bluffs, Carpinteria, Santa Barbara County, California, USA
September 12, 2010
Size: ~1 cm
This fly (I assume?) lit on the ground, in an area of mixed meadow and coastal sage scrub, including lots of coyote brush (Baccharis pilularis). Any help classifying it will be greatly appreciated.

Moved from ID Request.

Hemipenthes sinuosa
Note the "meatball" in the dark area near the wing tip. That's what gets these to species.

Good call, Joe, and a nice, cautious approach to the ID.

Somebody just posted this guy from California that looks like yours- http://bugguide.net/node/view/454237/bgimage- but wait for an expert for confirmation.
