actually Decticita brevicauda
D. balli
has shorter cerci pointing more upward, and the carinae of the pronotum are strongly developed (especially in males).

It's an adult male Shield-back Katydid,
but there are a lot of California species to choose from. When I have time to sit down and go through candidates, I can perhaps get it to species. In the mean time, I'll move it to the subfamily so it's easier to re-locate.
