It is a species of
genus
Melanoplus
. It appears likely that the wings will be somewhat short when it matures. I'm not sure what instar this is - if last instar the wings will definitely be short, but fully developed (not vestigial), but it's hard to be sure. If you can find some adult males in the same area, we may be able to pin it down to species by association. Also, I may be heading down there in a week or two myself, and I'll be looking for which species of
Melanoplus
are there.
M. franciscanus
is a somewhat stocky short-winged species that is there.
M. lakinus
is also there, and nymphs can look a lot like this. The shape of the hind legs and stocky build also remind me of
M. gladstoni
.
To bad this one is female. It is old enough that if male, it might be relatively easy to identify. Sure is pretty though.
