Early August Polistes dominula male, I think - Polistes dominula - Male
Santa Clara, Santa Clara County, California, USA
August 6, 2010
This is one of a number of photos I have taken of wasps on the roof area of our carport. Starting early August it seemed like there was a lot of activity. It actually appeared as though the paper nest parts that could be seen were being dismantled, and it even appeared that the young might have been being eaten! It could be that they were being relocated to an unseen nest being built in the interior of the carport roof, beyond my prying eyes.

There was also a strange behavior where wasps would emerge from the unseen interior and be fallen on by wasps that were hovering around the entrance apparently waiting for their opportunity. It first I thought it was an invasion, but looking at photos, it appeared to be possibly mating activity.

Since P. dominula is so common, I have been hesitant to post the pictures, but curiosity is getting the better of me. This first one I think is a male of the species, correct?

Yes.
Your species ID and gender are both correct.

Thanks, Eric
I may have one or two more reality checks of wasps from this setting as they were confusing behaviors to me.
