small brown horse fly - Hybomitra frontalis - female

small brown horse fly - Hybomitra frontalis - Female
New Jersey, Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada
September 5, 2004
Size: 8-10 mm
on my shirt in weedy field

not really enough views
to make a 100% positive ID. However, a couple of details lead to me believe it is Hybomitra frontalis - brown body, size, face, and especially the late date and location (NB). Not many NB tabanids fly this late.
Having said this I took a second look at Tom Murray's #21188 and #21189 here that I had ID'd as frontalis. It is now obvious to me that Tom's is not frontalis, will have to try again for that one.

Thanks, Tony
Previously, I had no idea what it was.
