Chalcophora fortis
I saw this beetle fly across the yard and then land about forty feet up the trunk of a giant White Pine. Fortunately my kids have a tall multi-level tree house in the same tree. I think this is the least common Northeast US Chalcophora. Personally, I have seen only one other US specimen, from State College, PA. I've heard reports that this is really a beetle of Eastern Canada that only occasionally shows up south of the border but I can not back this up with any real data.
