Canthon chalcites
det. M.C.Thomas, 2010. Set this guy up side by side with all three
Florida possibilities from Mike's synoptic collection and the winner was clearly
C. chalcites. He was able to show me the defining eye characteristics
to match the explanations given in Phillip H's

.
A great way to identify species.

Looks like C. pilularius, yes. Eyes too narrow for C. vigilans. Do you have Woodruff's 1973 key to the FL scarabs? It should help confirm. I am at work now and don't have access to any of my literature. Becareful when comparing images on BG. There are a few images under 'C. vigilans' in the guide that I have my doubts about (eyes too narrow, at least based on vigilans I have seen in GA).

C. pilularius
Yes Blaine, Woodruff's key agrees. Great description also. I had
looked in two other sources that indicated the same. My concept
to the eyes is still the same, not as narrow as the drawing, and
not as large as C. vigilans'. Still, another new species for me.
Tks.
