Oddbody Fly - Chrysopilus basilaris - male

Oddbody Fly - Chrysopilus basilaris - Male
Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
September 12, 2010
I spotted this very odd-looking fly on a lantana leaf in the back yard, just hanging out after a rain. Hoping that it would stick around, I went for my camera, and sure enough, it was still there, and stayed there immobile through my whole photoshoot of it. I wondered why its body was so very short until I got a side shot - glad I went for that!

I've never seen a little fly like this with such clear wings but the dark "shoulders" and curved-in abdomen. What is it?

Searching just now, I found this fly - is mine the same?

gotta be...
the same, or closely-related species to this one from Louisiana:

I wonder if it is worth grouping the similar-appearing ones as "species a", "species b", etc.? We've done that with some leaf beetles, for instance. This one is certainly similar to C. quadratus, but the wings are clear:

Incidentally, looking at other members of this genus where the sex is known, I'd say yours must be a male.

I think
we were having a similar experience, looking through that category. I found some that looked like mine, while others in there look very different - color, body shape and posture. Seems like it would make sense to group them the way you suggest. Who's the fly expert around here?

key out there
I just noticed there is a key, that would probably do it. I'll see if I can get it as a download from work, but I'm not sure if we have a JSTOR subscription.

I can't believe you are messing with BugGuide on a Friday night! I thought only old boring people like me did that.

Oh excellent find!
I am actually still at work tonight, burnt out on this project that was supposed to have ended two weeks ago but still lives through a thousand iterations and tweaks requested of me, and needing the occasional distraction. If I weren't at work, I wouldn't be on the computer after a day like today for sure! Despite that, I find BugGuide to be a great place to spend an evening - I decided I must be getting old myself when chilling out at home after a week of work became a preferable way to spend a Friday evening over going out. ;-)

Nice fine, Ashley
That's one weird fly!

Thanks!
It is, isn't it? It really puzzled me when I found it, before I took some photos I could view larger. Such a strange posture! It looked like it had no butt.
