Tattered Pandora Moth - Coloradia pandora - male

Tattered Pandora Moth - Coloradia pandora - Male
Northeast of Mammoth Lakes, Mono County, California, USA
July 24, 2005
This aging male was fluttering about the duff and lower trunks of Jeffrey Pine (Pinus jeffreyi) within the relatively large and uniform forest formed by that pine species northeast of Mammoth Lakes, on the east side of the Sierra Nevada.

The area and habitat here are where the Kuzedika Paiute have historically collected the larvae of Coloradia pandora as a significant food resource. See, for instance, the 1986 journal article Aboriginal Exploitation of Pandora Moth Larvae in East-Central California. An earlier account was written by entomologist J. M. Aldrich in 1912, before the identity of the moth was known...with a follow-up article in 1921, after the identity was resolved.
