Elongate-bodied Springtails (Entomobryomorpha) - Orchesella villosa

Elongate-bodied Springtails (Entomobryomorpha) - Orchesella villosa
Greenville, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA
September 18, 2010
Size: ~ 3/16"
I saw this zipping across the top of the water in the birdbath in my yard. When I approached, I got one photo of it before it zipped over to the side, where I took another one.
It didn't fully leave the water surface. Very small.

Orchesella villosa
Not a water bug, it does not belong on the water surface. Was probably trapped in the birdbath by accident. It is a typical dweller of the surface litter layer.

Orchesella villosa
Thank you for clarifying this. The second photo shows that it has made it to the side of the birdbath, so I'm hoping it was able to crawl away. Had I known it was not a water bug, I would have taken a leaf and given it a lift out of the water and down to the leaves around the bird bath. Seems like it made it on its own.

Moved from ID Request.

it's a Springtail
I'd hate to try to guess any further though. I really don't know them personally. That's an interesting looking one.
