Dance Fly (Empididae)? - Penthetria heteroptera

Dance Fly (Empididae)? - Penthetria heteroptera
Turtle River State Park, Grand Forks County, North Dakota, USA
September 19, 2010
Size: Length ~ 10-12 mm
Another Newbie for me! I think that this specimen may be an example of a Dance Fly (Empididae). I reckon that it's probably impossible to determine the genus from my image, but I thought I'd send it out to get an expert's opinion. Thanks for any confirmation or refutation! ;-)

Almost reminds me more of a March Fly...
Maybe one of the fall-flying species of Bibio?

But that's strictly speculation on my part, and I could be way off. I'll move the post to Diptera, where the folks with the actual expertise will be able to tell you what you've got.

Not Bibio
This can't be Bibio or Dilophus because the front tibiae are long and unornamented. It does look like male Nematocera. Among the Bibionidae it would have to be Penthetria heteroptera. I can't think of any other family it might belong to.

Well, I'll take some consolation
in the fact that I might have at least pegged the correct family. :)

Both correct...
This is a Bibionidae in the genus Penthetria, specifically Penthetria heteroptera the only species in the genus in NA...

Thank you!
Thank you Matt, John, and Ken for identifying this specimen! If I ever see another one, I won't mistake it for a Dance Fly (I hope). ;-)
