Fire-Colored Larva - Dendroides canadensis
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
January 22, 2006
Found under bark. As many of us have said many times on BugGuide, I find plenty of Pyrochroid larvae, and don't find the adults. The only adult I've found so far was in the next state over, Virginia.

Dendroides canadensis Latreille
This is Dendroides canadensis Latreille. Your comment, "I find plenty of pyrochroid larvae, and don't find the adults," is one of the primary reasons I first became interested in this family more than a few years back while I was an undergraduate at good old Michigan State University! The adults are out there - they are active at night (Dendroides comes to light); it also finds its way into flight intercept and Malaise traps. Ironically, in the neighboring Pedilinae (Pedilus) adults are ubiquitous and larvae are all but unknown. Keep hunting!

Thanks so much for your help with this image! These Dendroides haven't been coming to my mercury vapor lamp the last few years, but this coming season I'm going to try putting the lamp right in the middle of the woods and see what happens.
