Frosted Whiteface? - Leucorrhinia frigida

Frosted Whiteface? - Leucorrhinia frigida
Sharon, Windsor County, Vermont, USA
June 12, 2005
On sedge leaf beside pond.
Based on Tony Thomas' explanation of the differences between Frosted and Red-Waisted, this must be Leucorrhinia frigida. The inset shows the FW triangle with two (really 1.5) adjacent cells to the outside (if I understand the terminology).
Maybe the same specimen as #45701 (30 seconds later):

frosted whiteface
This is, indeed, the frosted whiteface (Leucorrhinia frigida). The wing venation in this individual is actually a bit different than those that I see in NE MN. The double row of cells in our specimens is usually very regular with the cells being lined up with each other instead of offset. There is MUCH variation in wing venation among any group of individuals. If it was the belted whiteface, formerly called the red-waisted whiteface, (Leucorrhinia proxima)it would have a triple row of cells beyond the FW triangle.
