Unidentified ground beetle - carabid? - Chlaenius erythropus

Unidentified ground beetle - carabid? - Chlaenius erythropus
Longview, Gregg County, Texas, USA
September 21, 2010
Size: 1 inch
Found this guy scurrying around in my office when I got to work yesterday morning. I believe he is a carabid of some kind. I put a recently dead cricket in with him and returned a bit later to find him eating on it. One feature I notice about him that might be a helpful identifying factor is that the second basal antenna segment is very short as compared to its fellows. The lower 3 segments also seem to be a lighter shade than the others. If anyone can identify, or point me in the direction of a good key that might include this species, I would be grateful. Thanks!

Moved tentatively

i wonder if this is Ch. erythropus

Chlaenius; unfortunate angle to tell more
plain dorsal always critical for carabids; you may try to key it out on(1), but your local fauna may not be fully covered in that key

pls edit location field per instructions (just Longview, not 'Longview, TX')

Many thanks!
Many thanks for your insight! I'll check out this key which seems likely to be useful, even if it does not include this species. Thanks again for your help!
