Hilltop wasp - Polistes comanchus - male

Hilltop wasp - Polistes comanchus - Male
Near Hillsboro, Sierra County, New Mexico, USA
September 6, 2010
Size: 1.5"
Picture taken while hiking at top of hill at about 5400 feet elevation, pinyon-juniper grassland environment. A good number of these were chasing after or being chased by the slightly larger Tarantula Hawk wasps.

Moved from Polistes. Good observation. Unlike many other Polistes males of this species do hilltopping.

Moved from Paper Wasps.

Moved from ID Request.

Very cool
It is a male Polistes, most likely Polistes comanchus navajoe

Great shot. I've never seen a male of this species
