maybe a polyphagid male

a typical-looking roach, you cah see his face --i'm sure big-eyed-- from the underside. it's hard to believe you haven't seen roaches in Fla. -- there are plenty, and all have this unmistakable forebody arrangement and spiny legs

I don't live in Florida anymore, I grew up in Winter Haven. Yes, I did see roaches there and palmetto bugs which I thought was a type of roach. The palmetto bug I was told growing up (not sure if accurate as I have not researched it) were bigger than "typical" roaches and lighter in color. I don't think I have ever seen a roach retract it's head before but honestly I really didn't take the time to care either, roaches creep me out big time! lol. Had I known this was a roach I would have never photographed it ;o).

Cockroach

I wonder is it might be a species of Wood Cockroach, Genus Parcoblatta ? Don't hold me to that level of ID though.

Interesting

I looked at other BG pictures and I think you are right. Odd, their head must retract under their mushroom hat? I was wondering why I couldn't find any eyes...lol. I will wait for confirmation before I move this "fellow".
