Sirex Horntail - Sirex - male

Sirex Horntail - Sirex - Male
In Westwood - elevation 5100ft, Lassen County, California, USA
September 20, 2010
Size: Body length 11mm
I believe this to be Sirex juvencus californicus based on keys and photos from the following websites. "Guide to the Siricid Wood Wasps of North America" a PDF document with excellent color photos and ID info on the Wood Wasps of North America. Page 35 cover this species - Sirex juvencus californicus. "Notes on Sirex juvencus californicu; with a Key to the California Species of Sirex"

I found this horntail on split lodgepole pine firewood.

Many thanks for a new Guide page once confirmed, or correct ID obtained!

Siricidae
I prefer to calle this Sirex sp. It is closest to S. behrensii and S. juvencus californicus, but the color does not fit either. Both have the base of the antennae pale, but S. j. californicus normally has the hind tibia and tarsus reddish. Males of Sirex are not easy to identify.
