Surface foraging army ants in Missouri - Neivamyrmex nigrescens

Surface foraging army ants in Missouri - Neivamyrmex nigrescens
Shaw Nature Reserve near Gray Summit, Franklin County, Missouri, USA
September 21, 2010
Size: 3-5 mm
I've seen an unusual amount of surface activity of this army ant this summer, probably because of the frequent rain maintaining high soil moisture. In past years I've seen them on the surface in the cooler periods of April-May and October, but not during summer. This picture was taken yesterday, but I saw surface activity in July and August this year, also.
