BG3030 E8684 - Sandalus niger - Male
Barney Farm, Hwy 103, 1.0 mi. NW Washington, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, USA

Size: body length 15.3 mm.
The best match we could find for this male beetle was the genus Sandalus. If correct, it would be significantly early compared with the usual Aug-Oct flight period.
Placement would be appreciated.

Sandalus yes
given the yellow tarsal pads and distribution in the southeast, most-likely S. petrophya. Nice series as always!

By the way, here in Atlanta, we see them late June and July.

Not S. petrophya
The thorax lacks the angulate sides of S. petrophya. This looks more like S. niger, but the date is unusually early. It could also be S. porosus, which has a similar thoracic profile but is said to be more densely punctured. There's no published data on that species' periodicity. A good ID will likely wait until the genus is revised.
