Out of Known Range? - Chlosyne fulvia - Female
Chino Valley Ranger District, Prescott National Forest, Yavapai County, Arizona, USA
September 23, 2010
I think this is Leanira Checkerspot but seems to be out of known distribution. I tried to get a photograph of the underside but no dice. What I saw was consistent for Leanira Checkerspot: hind wing & fore wing in contrast with hind wing light, fore wing orange.

Approximately 4800 Ft elevation (1463m) in riparian habitat with walnut, ash, cottonwood, willow within pinyon-juniper woodland.

Moved from Leanira Checkerspot.

I consulted with one of the BugGuide experts concerning this specimen and decided to move it to genus level.

Some consider and have considered C. leanira and C. fulvia to be one species.

This from the consultation email is congruent with some of my final thoughts before seeking the consultation: "The Prescott area seems far enough west and north [and this was a northwest section of the Prescott National Forest] that there could perhaps be a little genetic drift from C. leanira into the local C. fulvia (???)." (DJF).

Nonetheless, the consultant, noting that no view of the underside was available, prefered C. fulvia citing the black not orange palpi, and the largely orange abdomen and as a supporting characteristic the dark ringed antennae.
