Explanation of Names
Mischocyttarus Saussure 1853
from the Greek μίσχος (mísxos, míschos) 'stalk' + κύτταρος (kúttaros, cýttaros) 'cell of a honeycomb'
= 'stalked honeycomb' as the nest that Saussure described was suspended from a slender stalk or pedicel
Numbers
3 spp. in our area all in the subgenus Phi; the largest genus of social wasps, with nearly 250 described species(1)
* Records for a fourth species in our area, Mischocyttarus (Phi) phthisicus, correspond to M. mexicanus cubicola.(2)
Identification
Third and fourth tarsomeres of mid and hind tarsi strongly asymmetrical. First gastric segment narrowed into an elongate petiole.
