Black widow (Latrodectus variolus)? - Latrodectus variolus - female

Black widow (Latrodectus variolus)? - Latrodectus variolus - Female
Barrie, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada
September 6, 2010
Size: Roughly half an inch
We think it's a northern black widow, but only found out that it might be a black widow when we were back from our hike. Therefore, we didn't check the abdomen for the hour glass marking. It was living under a log and an egg sack was nearby, so we assume at least it's a female adult spider ;-)

highly likely
I checked the Bugguide range maps, and I don't see any Western, or Southern black widow up there. I'll leave it up to the spider pros whether or not it should go under species.

Sounds good.
According to the latest Canada checklist (May, 2010), L. variolus is the only widow species in Ontario.
