It's a Canon Rebel XTi. I was using the lens I just happened to have on it (it's a favorite)...a Canon EFS 17-85mm.
Just FYI, the moth has been identified as a Pink Spotted Hawkmoth...link: http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species?l=3356&chosen_state=*

If this happened in your garden you should have other chances to see this visitor; they tend to do their rounds in a regular basis (trap lining). You could have a video camera ready next time. Is this asking too much?
