Maybe
a spider egg sac? Size?

size
~7 mm, maybe a little bigger

boy, do I feel dumb. I thought all spider egg sacs were webby globular looking things! :)

Or maybe
a fungus or slime mold.

Spider egg sac
Probably Phrurotimpus.
Note the bumps in the middle from where the eggs used to be.

Thanks!
I knew I had seen the red ones in the guide before, but I didn't look past family level in Corinnidae.
