It's nice to have this mystery solved.

Tortricidae
I'm seeing a blackish larva covered with white pinacula, which indicates one of the generalist tortricine tortricids (e.g., Choristoneura). It appears to be making its overwintering shelter (not surprisingly, considering that it was the end of September).

Caterpillar
rolling/tying a leaf. See the video on this image (yours may be a different species)

Interesting video
Thanks. So what appeared to me to be a collection of tiny black spheres is actually the body of the caterpillar? I doubt if it was more than 20mm long. Do you have any idea what it may have been?

I think
"tiny black spheres" = caterpillar frass

It almost looks like...
a head is visible facing the bottom of the picture. It seems unlikely that there would be this much frass when the caterpillar hasn't even started feeding on this leaf yet, but I've also never seen a leafrolling larva that was covered with black bumps, so I don't know what else to say about it. The silk tying the leaf is definitely the work of a moth larva of some kind, and unfortunately I think we'd need a better closeup to say for sure what the deal is with the 'tiny black spheres'.
