E.Asia and NA; in our area: P. obcordata NF‒MN and south along the Appalachians, P. porcata along the Pacific and the Rockies(1)

Fungi associated with decaying trees; adults are surface feeders, larvae burrow into the substrate(1)
Remarks
Adults drop to the ground when disturbed, with appendages retracted(1)
