Unknown spider - Araneus illaudatus

Unknown spider - Araneus illaudatus
Durango, La Plata County, Colorado, USA
October 1, 2010
Size: 1 inch +
This spider apparently likes to come out to sun in the morning hours then moves into the shade. Roughly an inch long but it would be larger with it's legs straightened. It has a very large body.

Ah ha... and now... A. gemmoides?

Yes I think so
I was thinking it might be illaudatus, but it looks like the epigyne matches gemmoides.

Can you see enough of the epi
Can you see enough of the epigyne? Now that you mention illaudatus, I must say that the ventral appearance is a much closer match.

I think I can
It has the triangle pointy appearance instead of the rounded appearance of illaudatus. The ventral appearance is quite like illaudatus, but I've found that gemmoides can vary a bit and the lighter colored ones tend to have the look above (though this one is colored the most like illaudatus that I've seen yet).

Looks to be a female Orb Weaver
in the genus Araneus, but we can't tell more from this lateral image. Do you have dorsal and ventral images?

New photos
I did the best I could short of picking it up (and going into cardiac arrest). Hopefully these will provide the views you need. We lucked out with a fly immediately flying into the web so she went into action.
