Ovipositing. What is it? - Rhyssa alaskensis - Female
Randle, Lewis County, Washington, USA
October 2, 2010
Size: approx 4"
These bugs have been flying around the freshly split spruce for a couple of days at least, but around early afternoon today was the first time we saw them doing this...ovapositing into small cracks or holes in the wood? We would like to know what they are so we can read more about them.

Moved
Moved from Rhyssa.

The entirely black temporal orbit (i.e. no white marking immediately posterior to the eye) indicates R. alaskensis...see comments under post below for more ID details:

Ichneumonidae.
Maybe something in/near Rhyssa:

Don't hold me to the genus, though. Wait to hear from the experts.

Welcome to BugGuide!

That was quick!
