Northern Walkingstick - Diapheromera femorata - Two Females - Diapheromera femorata - Female
8th Crow Wing Lake, Hubbard County, Minnesota, USA
October 5, 2010
Here are the ladies! I've named the gray-form one Gretta, and the brown-form one Bertha. Bertha was the first I collected. She was crossing a county road, probably looking for more food. I had collected a male several days later, and they quickly found one another and mated. Two days of coupling and the male, whom I named Don Juan, dropped dead.

Gretta, on the other hand, was found on some firewood at a neighbor's home. She was most definitely used to possibly poplar, aspen and birch growth, due to her coloration. She was already large, and it is now obvious that she had already mated.

They both seem to enjoy each others company. They will roost very close, sometimes on one another. Gretta had previously lost a front limb, though a new one now sits in it's place.
