Badister ocularis
The groove in the left mandible is visible, if you know what to look for.

Nice view
Nice view of the mouthparts. Sure looks like a Ground Beetle. Beyond that, unless a Carabid expert rides in to the rescue, you have a lot of time comparing head and pronotum shapes ahead of you! A good rainy day project.

Carabid
For now I'll place it with the unidentified Carabids. Maybe I'll get lucky and stumble onto a picture of this when I'm looking through some websites.

Possibly a Badister
I will look eventually myself in the collection - Badister keeps suggesting itself, but not really sure. Not one of the typical carabid groups. This would be a good specimen to keep for me also. Thanks.

Smooth elytra
The Badisters in the guide have striations in the elytra, does that make a difference genus, or only in species?

probably means "wrong guess!"
It does have faint striae. Whatever it is, it is not one of the "usual" carabid genera. I have seen it before, but no name is really firm is coming to mind.
