Huge Beetle! (I guess) - Hydrophilus triangularis

Huge Beetle! (I guess) - Hydrophilus triangularis
Santa Clara, Santa Clara County, California, USA
October 10, 2010
Size: around 30mm
The color and appearance of a blob of oil - greenish grey with a dull liquid sheen. Photos of this same insect near a penny suggest a size of around 30mm. Incredibly strong, this insect easily pushed a rock larger than itself out of its way. (Picture a roughly cube shaped rock over an inch long being easily pushed aside! I think it may be missing a leg or two. I'll add at least one more image, one of its underside...

The back legs are somewhat over sized, giving it quite a lot of pushing power.

Frankly, I've never seen one of these, and would have guessed it would be found in some other country, where they probably eat them!
