Is there anything significant (in images 2 and 3) about what the male is doing to the female's right hind leg?

I don't know. Looks more to me like he's holding on for dear life.

I've got Douglass Morse's book -- I'll take a look.

 
Don't know
I just read the mating section of his book over the weekend. The male climbs on her back, crawls down one side, switches to the other side to service her other opening, then runs for his life. There wasn't anything about leg grooming that I noticed.
