stephanidae wasp ?? - Megarhyssa macrurus

stephanidae wasp ?? - Megarhyssa macrurus
Ransomville, Niagara County, New York, USA
October 4, 2010
Size: 7" to 8" overall
This landed on my truck windshield as i arrived home for lunch around 12:45pm. It has the coloring of a yellowjacket or wasp and has a long appendage attached to its abdomen. The main body was about 3 1/2" long and the appendage was approx 4 1/2" long. I have never seen anything like this before. I thought it was a type of dragonfly and found nothing online that resembled it. I did see a black bug that had a similar appendage and it was labeled as a wasp. It was very unusual in shape and pretty in coloring. I was only able to snap a few pics with my phone before it flew off, from inside and outside the truck.

Looks like one of the Giant Ichneumons
in the genus Megarhyssa--maybe M. macrurus:

Welcome to BugGuide!

Megarhyssa macrurus
I thank you. I think you are correct. Could you have answered any faster? I am sooo impressed!!!

Actually...
Eleven minutes isn't all that impressive by BugGuide standards. We're often quicker. Still, we're glad that you approve. We aim to please. :)

I can at least tell you that
I can at least tell you that this was my first posting and I was still in the process of trying to add additional images. What happens to this posting from here? Does it get removed or does the site like to keep pics and info for reference?

It depends...
Pics that add something to the Guide are kept; those that do not end up in "Frass," where they remain for 30 days until they are removed by the system. Of course, "add something" is subjective. Your pics aren't the sharpest, which would be an argument for "frassing" them. On the other hand, it looks as if we don't yet have an example of Megarhyssa from New York in October, which might be a reason to keep them. I'll leave them here for the time being, to see if any of the wasp experts feel strongly one way or another.
