Big Canyon, Newport Beach, Orange County, California, USA

Size: 1.2mm bl
Emerged from willow leaf gall which is yellowish and largely underneath the leaf, different from the red bean galls induced by Pontania

From Dr. Gagne: "The gall midge from Salix is a female, probably of Lestodiplosis. Larvae of these are predators, often in galls. I do not know the gall. Could it be a Pontania sawfly?"

How big is the gall?

just mentions one type of spherical midge gall on willow leaves, and it is about 2 mm in diameter. This looks a lot bigger than that, though, yes?
