Drone Fly - Eristalis tenax? Narcissus Bulb Fly - Merodon equestris? - Eristalis tenax
Greenville, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA
October 10, 2010
Size: ~ 1"
This did not make a buzzing sound when flying, as I've heard from Narcissus Bulb Fly. Also, its legs have yellow, not a solid black as in Narcissus Bulb Fly. Photographed on the late-blooming Montauk Daisies in my garden. It held its wings apart, not overlapping as in NBF. The only fly that appears to be similar in the field guides I checked was the Drone Fly? I've included more than three photos as I hope the various angles will help in making an ID. But, it may be more obvious than I'm aware of!

drone fly
it looks like the drone fly to me. one way to tell the drone fly from other similar species is its eyes, which have rows of hair on them, which I think I see here.

Drone fly, seconded
Nice images. FWIW, narcissus bulb fly is a lot more hairy. This is a female.
