Minute Tree Fungus Beetle pupa - Cis

Minute Tree Fungus Beetle pupa - Cis
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
March 18, 2006
Size: 3 mm approx.
I sometimes re-examine "beetle free" fungus from a week or two prior just to see if I missed anything. Here's one I missed -- obviously a larva when I first examined the piece of tree fungus I found it in, collected March 18, 2006. It looked like it was near maturity when I found and photographed it Mar. 28, 2006, and in fact it expupated the next day.

This individual was too large in my view to be any but the largest of the ciids I've encountered, and that's exactly what it turned out to be. I must say though, it could have been a miniature penguin, don't you think ;-)
