Wild Indigo Duskywing - Erynnis baptisiae - female

Wild Indigo Duskywing - Erynnis baptisiae - Female
Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana, USA
August 21, 2002
I had originally labeled this as a Juvenal's Duskywing, but now I think that, given the date of 8-21, Juvenal's is unlikely. I'm having a hard time telling Juvenal's from Wild Indigo Duskywing, which I now think this might be. Unfortunately, I didn't get a shot of the underside. If anyone could tell me whether this is a Wild Indigo Duskywing, Juvenal's Duskywing, or something else, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Duskywing
You're right that the date pretty much rules out Juvenal's. The lack of a forewing cell-spot also isn't right for Juvenal's, but just right for Wild Indigo. I don't know where Howard County is, but Columbine and Persius Duskywings also range into Indiana, and both are extremely similar to Wild Indigo.

Duskywing
Howard county is in central Indiana, north of Indianapolis. I hadn't considered Columbine or Persius Duskywings because the range maps in my guide books show them only in the very northern counties of the state. However, my guide books also show that the Sachem doesn't range into central Indiana, but I saw several this year (first time), so I guess that butterfly ranges must change over time. I'll assume for now that this is a Wild Indigo. Thanks for your time and insight.
