Jumping Spider - Phidippus audax - male

Jumping Spider - Phidippus audax - Male
Salisbury, Maryland, USA
October 7, 2010
Size: .75-1"
I think it might be a "Daring Jumping Spider", species Phidippus audax, however at this size I thought it should have more white markings (Audubon guide says that the juvies have orange markings, adults white). This one was very large for a jumping spider, and the markings were quite orange, not very white.

Nice!
Audubon is not exactly the best guide for insects, since they may use old pictures and don't update literature very often. Spiders of the North Woods is my favorite, though technically for the Great Lakes region, it does share a lot of your species. Spiders of Eastern North America is a great guide too, though more expensive.

Jumping Spiders of many species can be quite variable, even within sexes. I would agree that this may be Phidippus audax, which is known in the guide as Bold Jumping Spider.
