Toxorhina sp. - Toxorhina

Toxorhina sp. - Toxorhina
Naples (Golden Gate Estates), Collier County, Florida, USA
March 30, 2006
Size: ~ 2.25 cm (head to end)
The body is sitting roughly 1.25 cm off of the wall's surface.

Thinking it was the world's meanest-looking mosquito, I ran far away after snapping the photograph... ;)

Not a mosquito
but a female crane fly of the genus Toxorhina . Along with two other crane flies of the genera Geranomyia and Elephantomyia, they are the three groups of crane flies that have elongated mouthparts, thus often be mistaken as mosquito, but they don't bite as a real mosquito does. Nice shot, see also this image in the Guide - Chen

Thanks very much, Chen. I was scared for a minute there! ;)
