Hairy Orange Caterpillar - Megalopyge

Hairy Orange Caterpillar - Megalopyge
Weatherford, Parker County, Texas, USA
October 17, 2010
Size: about 1 inch long
We saw 2 of these caterpillars on a warm Sunday afternoon in late October in Weatherford, TX. One was crawling on a live oak tree and one was on the house. The one on the house has now made a cacoon. We haven't had any luck identifying them. Anyone with information on these cool caterpillars would be great!

Don't touch!
This is what Texans call an asp. It has a powerful sting. I accidentally brushed my arm against one and it felt like an acid burn. I love them anyway just treat them with respect.

How about something like...
...a Southern Flannel Moth (Megalopyge opercularis)?

Be careful! They can sting!

-EDIT-

Maybe closer to a Black-waved Flannel Moth (Megalopyge crispata)...
