ant id
Don, I thought you liked beetles, not ants. Is this something you want me to save for you?

Ants for me - no.
I just pick off the easy ones. While I know them somewhat because I am the ant identifier for the state, I don't want anyone to think I REALLY want to look at them.

This one isn't common here and its colonies are small, but I have picked it up a fair number of times sifting leaf litters in southern NH, and Stefan Cover at the MCZ has been kind enough to work our ants up several times so the collection is in pretty good shape.

Ponerinae (tribe Ponerini) - worker
Nice shot showing the typical habitus of an ant of this group. They are among the rare dark ants to have so small compound eyes.
This one could well be Ponera itself, although other genera like Hypoponera and Cryptopone cannot be excluded.
