Onthophilus sp - Onthophilus alternatus

Onthophilus sp - Onthophilus alternatus
Green Cove Springs, Clay County, Florida, USA
October 20, 2010
Size: 2.9mm
Collected from a fresh cow pattie. One other, smaller at 2.47mm. Interesting little
dung sucker. Strongly believe genus is firm, my guess to sp would be O. nodatus as
intervals 3,5 & 7 are raised. Life in a cow pile must be rough. Both of these were
missing several tarsi, not just the front ones. Difficult for me to get clear shots
with these tiny guys.

O. alternatus ?
The Harvard MCZ database lists three subspecies of O. alternatus.
O.a. alternatus; O.a. nodatus; and O.a. pluricostatus. I can go
along with it not being *. nodatus as the pygidium on this specimen
is more oblate, whereas nodatus is almost round. O.a. pluricostatus
is slightly more oblong, but not as much as O.a. alternatus. I don't
know what has been done to the genus taxonomically, but the FL
checklist has just the subspecies names, so, lets go along with
O. alternatus.
