Fungus on darkling beetle? - Eleodes goryi

Fungus on darkling beetle? - Eleodes goryi
Mount Bonnell in Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA
October 24, 2010
Size: 3/4"
Spotted 4-5 of these on Mount Bonnell across a period of an hour or so without looking for them in particular. Here's another specimen: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samuelhuckins/5111878078/ I think it is a darkling beetle, perhaps this species: http://www.tenebrionidae.net/simplephpgallery3/sp_index.php?file=./Folder30/Polopinus%20ingens%20casey%201924.jpg I'm mostly curious about the oblong yellow orange objects on the thorax. Is it a fungus? All the beetles I saw in this area had one to four of them.
