metallic ground beetle - Loricera foveata

metallic ground beetle - Loricera foveata
Puyallup (frog pond), Pierce County, Washington, USA
October 24, 2010
Size: 9 mm
Found under a stone next to a pond. It still has a little dried mud on it. Nice hairy antennae, don't ya think?

Marshall shows Loricera pilicornis that looks quite similar. Adults use the hair on the antennae to trap spingtails and other prey.

ID confirmed...
as L. foveata after keying out specimen. You may want to correct body size as the actual size I measured was 7.5 mm, which fits the published body size of 6.5-7.5 mm in Lindroth much better.
Also will like to correct my previous comment about diagnostic characters: the species has 3 foveae on the 4th elytral interval and 2 on the 7th interval. Thanks for the specimen as this is a new species addition to my collection!

Loricera foveata (LeConte)
The only nearctic species with pale legs and with 2nd, 4th, and 7th elytral intervals each with 3 foveae. Western-only species ranging from WA to CA. Would love to have the specimen if you have kept it :)

Yes
I have it. I'm taking it to a macro photography talk tonight, but then I could send it your way. Just email me and tell me what to do.
