Roosting Dragonfly - Sympetrum corruptum

Roosting Dragonfly - Sympetrum corruptum
San Pedro, Los Angeles, CA, USA County, California, USA
October 27, 2010
I saw this dragonfly perch on my backyard Orange Berry Tree at 5:33pm. It stayed for the night. Photo is taken through an upstairs window, with a 952mm f/7.5 lens converted to 755mm f/6 using a reducer.

Since it was getting very dark already when I took this photo (6:10pm), I had to steady the camera with a second tripod (actually a tripod converted into a bipod). The photo is from two stacked 3 second exposures taken at ISO 100.

A second individual joined this one on the same branch, sometime between 5:53pm and 6:03pm.

Edit: By 7:00am both Variegated Meadowhawks were already gone, before the sun had even broken above the horizon. I expected them to need to warm up in the sun before flying; but on the other hand it was already 64°F outside (although windy). We're having hot dry weather now (Santa Ana wind condition).

Nice shot and well worth the effort.

Thank you Ron
for the complement and quick ID!
